The Hyannis Port Story

How many of the names in this story do you recognize? Do you know who Arthur Schlesinger, Jr is? [Ask your histroy teacher?]

So, I read this story and was really interested. As far as the names, I recognized all the Presidents, Jackie, Caroline, Robert and Adlai Stevenson. Goldwater, Teddy, Shiela, Pierre Salinger, orJoe, but from later reading I figured out that must be JFK's dad.

I really liked this story because it proved the futileness of some people's lives. Commodore Rumfoord revolved his life around hating the Kennedy's and when he son married one, he had nothing left. I especially liked the end when the President said how he enjoyed the competition by asking for the lights back on the cutout Senator.

This was an interesting story. I think that there exist a few similarities between the main character and Nick Carraway. Both of them were neutral characters, and serve to show how this type of narrator can be trusted.

I know Goldwater from the famous "Daisy Girl" attack ad. Which I find to be ironic since Kennedy attacked Goldwater by saying that his presidency would result in a nuclear bomb, and the footage that was used was a bomb that we exploded. I recognized, as well, Arthur Schlesinger and Adlai Stevenson.
Also, the last name Rumfoord is from Vonnegut's story "Sirens of Titan," though I haven't found any connection between the two.

This was a comical story and showed that two are not necessary in order to "tango." Rumfoord had a feud against Kennedy, but Kennedy has no malice towards Rumfoord other than making witty comments. After all, he is the president, why should he be unhappy?

I recognized quite a few names from this...all the Kennedy's, Schleisinger, Adlai Stevenson (U.N.)...and I really enjoyed this story. Commodore Rumfoord was a comically staunch, Goldwater Republican. I found that funny because I always thought Goldwater was a somewhat antiquated extremist. And I can't forget about those celebrity waffles - they made up quite the Kennedy Camelot.

I think all feuds are pointless (in R & J, the Grangerfords, etc.) and I think the Commodore starts to see this too at the end. He starts to see individuals (like Sheila), not just their context. He's obviously disappointed because he has a long lineage of conservativeness, but I think Vonnegut is trying to show us how one father can take steps to push past feuds and such for family. If a Goldwater supporter can do this for a Kennedy girl, others can definitely push aside differences, too.

This realization gives Commodore's life more meaning. He realizes he must do something more than his life than hand out Goldwater buttons and complain about stinkpots and the un-secret service.

I actually recognized almost all of the names in this story, mainly thanks to APUSH. At first, I wondered what Hyannis Port is (which is the only reason I read this story). However, I really enjoyed reading this story, with its many twists. I thought that the son was caught defiling the boat and that Kennedy was going to make a snide remark about how Goldwater lost, but the actual scenraios were much better than my guesses.

I recognized pretty much all of the names in the story except for Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Pierre Salinger.

I really think that this story exemplified the country's fascination with the Kennedy family and the celebrity status that they achieved. I cannot imagine any other presidential family recieving the attention that the Kennedy's recieved in Hyannis Port. I also found the story interesting because of the highlighting of one man's strange purpose in life (to hate the Kennedy family) crushed when his son becomes engaged to a Kennedy.

The only reason I read this one was because I went to Hyannis Port last summer and went to a JFK museum so I thought I may recognize some of the things or places the story talked about. I didn't recognize hardly any of the names besides JFK and Caroline and another few that I read about or saw pictures of at the museum. Most of the places in the story weren't specific enough for me to remember, but I do remember areas that looked similar to or sounded like places he described in the story.

I thought this was an interesting story. I recognized all the names and references, so I was able to understand and enjoy the story. I found the Commodore hilarious, since he hated how JFK and his family led rich and privileged lifes and had the Secret Service wherever they went, but he also was an aristocrat with old money and too much of it. I loved how both parties were thrown a complete curveball by the Rumfoord-Kennedy love affair. I sensed a Montague-Capulet situation going on. Hay Boyden in the beginning and Adlai Stevenson and Walter Reuther in the boat made me think of the Democrats as one family or gang, and the Rumfoord family as the Republican gang. Then after reading JFK's conversation with the Commodore, I realized that situation wasn't present, it was just the Commodore trying to make it that way.

I recognized all the names because I'm 62-frigging-years-old.

This story was thought provoking, but I also don't want to overthink it since it is a short story of Vonneguts and not a full work ( I've been reading a lot of his genius works lately ). I recognized the President and his family members, but many I did not, not Goldwater, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Pierre Salinger. I stay out of politics.

Commodore Rumfoord appears a person whose life revolves around his family name, being republican, and anti-kennedy, despite all the flaws in this obsession. His wife sighs each time he speaks of it and is elated with his sons marriage, and even says she would admire him more if he worked. His son is disinterested in politics and the Commodore remains blind to it until he cannot anymore ( the marriage ). President Kennedy appears to care less and even enjoys the competition, as if it's good for him, which It very well be, another remind to keep him competitive. The president even calls him commodore! You see the narrator point out the odd detail of the Mr. Rumfoord calling himself a Commodore, despite no military service. And the narrator wasn't decided on politics one way or the other, yet Mr.Rumfoord assumed he was on his side because he had a biased outlook and remained bling to feedback that did not support his bias. You see the tour boat speaker pointing out the flaws in Mr.Rumfoords obsession with the Kennedys and his way of living ( not working ), and the audience member who challenges his son. In both of these cases Mr.Rumfoord gives an angry, emotional response. And then there's the secret agent trying to communicate to the Commodore. Mr. Rumfoord remains willfully blind until a lot of persistence by the agent and is also emotional. In all these cases THE WORLD is giving the Commodore feedback and he is being willfully blind and paying the consequences.

I think this shows reasons for what will happen if you don't listen to the feedback of the world around you, even if it feels negative and uncomfortable. He remained willfully blind to the truth and was paying the consequences. Two examples were his son and his wife. His son was disinterested in politics, didnt seem in the best health, and was hiding his important relationship from him. His wife was constantly sighing and did not admire his lack of a job. I think this also shows that sometimes the best thing for you is what you least think you want, as evidenced by his son and wife's happiness, and him finally facing the reality of who he is ( " who am I? " ). It reminds me of a quote by Carl Jung, " That which we need the most will be found where we least want to look."

The real value then comes from applying to our own lives. If we remain willfully blind, again and again we will be confronting it until it becomes unavoidable and we find the chance to face the truth. This could be in the form of a break up, heartbreak, eviction, debt going to collections, jail, etc. And I think the start to moving forward from facing this reality can be asking ourselves the question "who am I," as the Commodore did.
